Arriving at Alum Creek (pronounced “creek”), we detoured up to a branch of upper Alum to examine the remains of a reported snowshoe cabin. I have found it mentioned yearly in the “Stocking Rations reports” beginning in 1898, then it disappears from the archival radar sometime before 1910. Often times the reports of these cabins describe bears destroying the interiors or roofs caving in from weight of the snow. The history of this gem hasn’t been fully researched yet; it still sits silently in this neat finger of upper Alum Creek, probably located there because the water of lower Alum isn’t drinkable! Whatever its story, I wish it could tell us….
