Why is this so exciting for me? This is the original route of early visitors, a YNP Road Junkie’s dream. Before the completion of the road from Old Faithful to Thumb, the tourists would visit Old Faithful, then backtrack back to Fountain Flats to cross over the divide of Mary Mountain to see Mud Volcano and Lake before heading for Canyon. This was the only route! Stage travelers had to eat something, so a lunch station was set up to stop and feed the hungry travelers while the horses took a break. I couldn’t wait to see such a historic locale. In my never ending quest for good quotes, I have pages of Larry’isms, so he feels like an old friend. KenT still wanted to find the dumps and gravel pits, and we had to restrain him.
