After a lovely drive through beautiful Blacktail Plateau Drive, we pop down to Tower Falls. No, the trail to the base of the falls still hasn’t been fixed, but we still love the walk down to the confluence of Tower Creek and the Yellowstone River. Then rattle-rattle-thunder-clatter up to the Antelope Creek overlook, too hot and dry today for elk at mid-day so no bears, but there is one active predator, a hard-working hawk. I can’t tell for sure, through the binocs he really looks like a Swainson’s, but he hovers distinctly, a talent Stokes doesn’t attribute to Swainson’s, looking for a meal in the sage and grass. But oh! the section of new road is just beautiful, with no obvious diminishment of the roadside ecology other than what would clearly be required to widen the road and shoulder and to vastly improve the pullouts.

Speaking of renovations, when we get to Canyon, we see construction of the new big visitors’ center is well underway.
