We haven’t done Beaver Ponds Loop in ages, so it’s off to Mammoth we go. There are only a couple of elk cows visible around Opal Terrace, then finally I hear two toots out of an invisible bull. These are to be the only two elk bugles we hear on this entire trip, rut is just getting into gear. The bulls are definitely thinking about it (especially the notorious Mr. 10) but the cows aren’t in estrus yet, so while allowing themselves to be gathered into harems, they definitely have a “whatever” attitude towards the big racks.

Beaver Ponds is a great trail, with deep cool woods, sparkling aspen-lined grassland, and open sage with views of Mt. Everts and associated benches, though at this time bereft of charismatic megafauna, and actual beavers. We do get circled and commented on by a noisy hawk (an immature red-tail?) and the ponds themselves have a variety of water fowl and plenty of evidence of beaver handiwork.
