After a stroll around exquisite Trout Lake and up over a knoll to take a look back at Soda Butte in the grand context of Lamar Valley, we decide to walk Slough Creek to First Meadow. Going down a not-too-steep decline in the trail my left foot somehow rolled out from under me and I hit (in what must have been quite an acrobatic show, sorry I couldn’t watch it) both my knee, which gained a painful mini-goose egg, and my behind, which gained an impressive – both in size and color – bruise. This prompted me to look at my shoes, and lo-and-behold, no tread left! Well, it’s sure a badge of honor to wear your hiking gear down to nubbins, but it did make me ultra-cautious for the rest of the trip.
