After wavering back and forth about doing it, we decided to take up the challenge of Avalanche Peak on this visit to the park. The trail started upward as soon as we left the trailhead at Eleanor Lake near Sylvan Pass and had almost no level spots. It was only two miles up, but the elevation gain was 2,100 feet. I may have set the record for speed...slow speed, that is, but I made it. Looking out at all the other mountain peaks around you and the lake below makes one feel like you are on the top of the world. After eating our lunch in a windbreak at the top, we made our way back over the shale rock, back to timberline, and finally back to the trailhead. We're glad we did it but said we'd never do it again.
