Today we hiked seven miles round trip to Mallard Lake. Trailhead started near Old Faithful Lodge. Elevation gain was 825 feet, but it was a pretty lake and a nice setting for our picnic lunch. On the way back I heard crackling and then a loud boom when evidently one of the 1988 burned trees finally crashed to the ground. I am still amazed at how many of those trees are still standing 17 years after the fire. Looked around Old Faithful Inn a little before heading back to Lake. After supper we drove back to Nez Perce Ford and found the same griz and cub on the carcass, pluss about 200 people watching. It was a continuous parade of vehicles coming in and going out the turnoff lane. Although this was a popular spot for the trout fishermen, the Rangers had posted "No Fishing" signs (for the protection of the fishermen).
