Drove to Lava Creek picnic area about 4 miles east of Mammoth and hiked to the other trailhead opposite the Mammoth campground, supposedly a distance of 4.5 miles, but it seemed longer. This was a very nice hike, which passed Undine Falls and followed Lava Creek and later Gardner River after they joined near the High Bridge. We ate our lunch at the suspension bridge over the Gardner River, then had to climb another 1/4 go 1/2 mile uphill to the trailhead pullout where we'd left 2nd car. After retrieving the 1st car we headed back to Mammoth. A black bear crossed the road just in front of us near the Gardner bridge. After a quick photo shot of the bear's rear as it walked away from us down the hillside, we drove on so as not to hold up traffic. Wondering whether our other two friends behind us saw the bear, we were miffed to find out that they'd seen it plus its two cubs. The cubs had finally gotten across the road and were playing. Next we went to Sheepeater Cliffs and walked along the Gardner River 1/2 mile. We enjoyed seeing the marmots, a pika, the cascades, and the northward view of the valley below. Later from Gardiner we drove up into the hills about 5 miles to the old town of Jardine. Besides the newer residences, we saw some old log houses and ruins of an old mining building. Our Montana friend told of when she was a little girl and her family and their sheepherders would travel to Jardine for supplies when they grazed sheep on public lands nearby during the summers.
