Passing Crater Hills to the north, the last bit of sunlight lit up the thermal areas on their west side. I got ahead of Ballpark to try to hitch a ride, so I didn’t have to endure one more minute of deer flies and mosquitoes. The plan was to grab his car and come back. Several cars passed me before a nice visitor from the UK pulled over. He cleared the front seat, handed me his camera and said, "If you see a moose, take a picture!" (!) He really wanted to talk hiking and wildlife viewing. When I told him I had passed 400 bison he wanted to hike there the next day...I hope I talked him into Washburn or Avalanche instead. He dropped me at the Trout Creek monad where I profusely thanked him and hurried to get into Ballpark’s car.

A mysterious looking character parked nearby said "Hey, what are you doing in Frank’s car?" At long last, I meet the elusive Tim A, another history nut! He had blown into Yellowstone following a caddis hatch. Tim took off in his van to rescue Ballpark from the winged blood-suckers and I drove back to Crater Hills to offload my gear to my vehicle and meet them there. Estimated distance was about 21 miles; time out was 13 hours.
