    This poignant statement on the plight of the bison from Acting Superintendent Capt. Geo. S. Anderson comes from his 1896 Supt Report. What nice writing in these supposedly “dry” government documents! I love reading this stuff.

    “Taken together there is fair certainty of the existence of 25 or 30, and possibly of 50. Whether or not I shall be able to save them remains a doubtful problem. The forces of nature and the hands of man are alike against them, and they seem to be struggling against an almost certain fate.”
