    In Philetus Norris’ Superintendent Report for 1880, Norris apparently had the same idea that Ballpark had… proposing a direct route from the area of upper Alum to Crater Hills, with another heading southerly to Mud Volcano for visitors headed for Lake. Ballpark had this same thought, that there must be a good way! The next year Norris opened up his road and the map shows only one road, where he “split the difference”-- the single road traversing Hayden Valley on the Trout Creek route we know today. Maybe Norris already knew what we are attempting to figure out...

    Sticking to the “best” route for tourist travel isn’t what draws Ballpark to these explorations, but we might find that Norris beat him in finding the fastest route from Alum to Crater...by 125 years. That won’t deter BPF from wanting to explore yet another angle...
